Altamont is a Grundy County seat built around elevation and crossroads, not a river bottom town. Its name joins “alto” and “mont,” and the town sits on the southern Cumberland Plateau between the Highland Rim escarpment to the west and Savage Gulf to the east. The center of Altamont straddles a flattened-out hillslope, with hills on all sides, so residential work here follows the shape of the plateau as much as the street grid. Main Street is Tennessee State Route 56, tying Altamont north toward Beersheba Springs and McMinnville and south toward Coalmont, Tracy City, and Monteagle.
The other working corridors are Tennessee State Route 108 toward Viola, McMinnville, and Whitwell, and Tennessee State Route 50 toward Pelham and Interstate 24. Altamont’s older civic story still shows in town: it was established in 1848 after Grundy County was created, with General Adrian Northcutt pushing for the site. Northcutt Cove just north of town ties into one of the oldest Mormon congregations in the southeastern United States, while the former school building now houses Altamont City Hall and the Altamont Library and Museum.
