Charlotte is organized around the State Route 49 and State Route 48 junction just west of the court square, with SR 49 running toward Ashland City and Kentucky on one side and upper West Tennessee on the other, and SR 48 tying the town back to Dickson, U.S. Route 70, and Clarksville. For a residential team, those roads define the practical map of the town. Charlotte sits in the hills of the western Highland Rim, nearly halfway between Dickson and Ashland City, with Town Branch running west to east through town as part of the Cumberland River watershed.
The reason Charlotte feels older and more courthouse-centered than nearby Dickson goes back to its start as the Dickson County seat in 1804. A tornado destroyed most of downtown Charlotte on May 30, 1830, carried the courthouse roof 13 miles away, and wiped out many early county records; the courthouse completed in 1833 still stands as Tennessee’s oldest functioning courthouse. Charlotte remained a stage coach hub through much of the 19th century, but the railroad later shifted industrial focus southwest to Dickson. Summers here are hot and humid, with mild to cool winters.
