Coalmont’s story starts with coal, not subdivision planning. Established in Grundy County around 1904, it was a Sewanee Coal, Coke and Land Company town where the company built and owned residences, businesses, and commercial buildings, while individual miners could also build their own homes. That company-town mix is the local backstory for residential work here: houses grew out of a mining settlement, not a later suburban grid. The early-20th-century coke ovens on the National Register of Historic Places are the clearest landmark of that origin, with the Coalmont Bank Building another named remnant of the same era.
