The way Cosby is built comes from its mountain-valley history. Cherokee hunting grounds gave way to early Cocke County settlement in the 1780s, then farms, lumber work, and small schoolhouses shaped the Cosby Creek valley before the Great Smoky Mountains National Park took in only part of the community. Unlike Cades Cove or the Sugarlands, Cosby was not fully cleared out for the park, so houses remained scattered along the valley roads. The Foothills Parkway and the park still anchor local travel, cabins, motels, and country-style restaurants.
