Crossville is still a crossroads town: the old Great Stage Road between Knoxville and Nashville and the Kentucky Stock Road cattle route line up roughly with U.S. 70 and U.S. 127, and I-40 cuts across the north side. The original junction was near Main and Stanley Streets, just south of the Cumberland County Courthouse, where Samuel Lambeth opened a store around 1800 and where James Scott later ran Scott’s Tavern. When Cumberland County was formed in 1856, Crossville became the county seat because it sat near the county center, and Scott donated 40 acres for the courthouse square that still anchors the city.
South of town, the Cumberland Homesteads came from a Great Depression federal housing project tied to small farms, with its recreation area becoming Cumberland Mountain State Park; Eleanor Roosevelt visited in 1934.
