Dickson’s layout starts with the railroad: the city began as a stop on the line between Nashville and the Tennessee River, and after Union troops finished the Civil War supply line the place was known as Mile 42 post. The name later honored Congressman William Dickson, though local history preserves the Sneedsville/Smeedsville dispute, including an 1867 Chancery Court reference to Smeedsville.
