Elizabethton’s map starts with the Watauga River and the Doe River. The “Watauga Old Fields” were along the Watauga River valley at present-day Elizabethton, and Tiptonville was laid out on the banks of the Doe River near its confluence with the Watauga before the county seat was renamed Elizabethton in 1796 for Elizabeth MacLin Carter and Elizabeth McNabb.
