Franklin sits about 21 miles south of Nashville, but its shape still comes from the Harpeth River and the old Williamson County seat that grew on both sides of it. Abram Maury Jr. founded the town in 1799 and named it for Benjamin Franklin; he is buried in what is now Founders Pointe. In the 19th century, Franklin was the trading and judicial center for a rural, agricultural county, and that older core still matters because many buildings and neighborhoods are protected by city ordinances. The Carter, Carnton, and Lotz houses remain from the Civil War era, when the Second Battle of Franklin turned 44 buildings into field hospitals.

Since 1980, northern Franklin has filled in with residential development, while employers such as Nissan, Community Health Systems, and Mars Petcare help support the households living around that growth.
