Friendship is Crockett County small-town work, and its name is tied to a local bargain rather than a slogan. The place was founded in 1853, after a post office was already operating in the area by 1844; it was laid out in 1858 and incorporated the next year, with W.P. Rice as first mayor. Local lore says two main stores sat about a mile from the post office, then agreed to meet in the middle and move to what became the downtown. That shared move is the “friendship” residents still hear in the city’s name.
By the 1920s, the Birmingham and Northwestern Railroad had put track along the east side of Friendship and built a depot, giving the town a railroad edge as well as a central downtown. For a residential team, those facts matter more than a list of subdivisions: house calls are understood around downtown Friendship, the east-side rail line, and the rural Crockett County setting around them. William Fones, later a Tennessee Supreme Court jurist, was born here, another reminder that Friendship’s story is local and long-running.
