That Friends Meetinghouse is not a token landmark; it comes from the Quakers who came from New Garden, North Carolina, and settled the area in the 1790s. In the years before the Civil War, Quakers had major influence in Blount County’s abolitionist movement, and Friendsville was a stop on the Underground Railroad along with nearby Greenback and possibly Cades Cove. A cave near the meetinghouse, now filled in, was stocked with provisions by William J. Hackney and other Quakers for fugitive slaves and later Union-bound soldiers. In 1854, British Quaker elder William Forster died during an abolitionist visit and was buried here.
