Hampton sits in Carter County a few miles southeast of Elizabethton, with U.S. Routes 321 and 19E carrying most local traffic south of town and Tennessee State Route 67 tying the drive back toward Interstate 26 at Exit 24. The railroad story is still visible around Doe River Gorge, where a narrow-gauge railroad runs on former East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad roadbed, while Cherokee National Forest, the Appalachian Trail, Dennis Cove, Laurel Fork, and Watauga Lake keep Hampton tied to the mountain traffic east of town.
