Kingston sits as Roane County’s seat about thirty-six miles southwest of Knoxville, where the Clinch, Emory, and Tennessee rivers meet in what is now Watts Bar Lake. The town’s layout starts with Fort Southwest Point, built just south of present-day Kingston in 1792, with a Cherokee village under Chief Tollunteeskee across the river at what is now Rockwood. Kingston was established on October 23, 1799, during the push to partition Knox County, and its name comes from Major Robert King of Fort Southwest Point. Its one-day turn as Tennessee’s capital came on September 21, 1807, when the Tennessee General Assembly met there before returning to Knoxville.
For residential contractors, Kingston’s routing is built around Interstate 40, U.S. Route 70, and State Route 58. U.S. 70 ties the city east toward Knoxville and west toward Nashville, while State Route 58 runs northeast toward Oak Ridge and south toward Chattanooga. The TVA Kingston Fossil Plant, completed in 1955, is part of that local view; its 1,000-foot smokestacks are a familiar landmark along the Roane County stretch of Interstate 40.
