LaFollette sits in Powell Valley at Big Creek Gap, with Cumberland Mountain rising to the north and Norris Lake dominating the area to the south. The town’s shape goes back to Harvey and Grant LaFollette, who bought 37,000 acres around 1890 and formed the LaFollette Coal, Iron, and Railway Company; even after that business failed in the 1920s, the community kept growing around the gap.
