McKenzie’s crossroads identity started with rail, not highways. In 1865, land owned by James McKenzie was surveyed and platted where the Nashville & Northwestern Railroad crossed the Louisville & Memphis Railroad, and McKenzie Station rose at that junction before incorporation in 1869. Grover Cleveland stayed overnight in 1887 at the McKenzie Hotel next to the depot, a reminder of how much the railroad shaped the town’s center. Bethel University has been on the north side since 1872, and the Tennessee College of Applied Technology’s programs include HVAC, tying local training back to the trades that serve McKenzie homes.
