Michie is oriented around the meeting of State Route 22 and State Route 224, just north of the Tennessee-Mississippi state line. State Route 57 crosses the northern part of town and runs east toward Pickwick Lake, while TN 22 leads north toward Shiloh National Military Park. A home-service team working Michie will also hear Acton, Tulu, Liberty, Chambers, Pebble Hill, and Caffey used as local reference points, because those nearby communities identify with Michie through commerce, entertainment, and education. Michie Elementary, the Blue Devils’ school on Hwy 57E, is another everyday landmark.
The older story starts before incorporation in 1961. The community locals called Pea Ridge formed along Lick Creek in the 1820s, where settlers built water mills before McNairy County established roadways in the late 1840s and early 1850s. Benjamin F. Sanders later used the name Monterey, but when a post office name was needed in 1887, Michie was chosen after a local family. During the Civil War, the “Mickey House” was used by Confederate forces before the Battle of Shiloh, and a Monterey warehouse became a hospital after the fighting.
