The name Pinson goes back to the mounds. Surveyors including Joel Pinson and Memucan Hunt Howard found a Middle Woodland platform mound in 1820 while surveying land grants for Colonel Thomas Henderson, and the post office used Mount Pinson in 1827 before becoming Pinson in 1866. Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park now preserves the mound area on upland above the South Fork of the Forked Deer River. The older residential memory also includes the March 11, 1923 tornado, later estimated as F5, a reminder that roofs and exteriors here have always had to answer to West Tennessee weather.
