May Cravath Wharton later built medical care around the academy, creating a hospital and the Uplands Sanatorium before that hospital work moved to Crossville as Cumberland Medical Center. Just east of town, Camp Crossville adds another local marker: during World War II it held German and Italian officers from November 1942 until the war ended.
