South Pittsburg sits in the southwestern Sequatchie Valley, pressed between the Cumberland Plateau to the west and the Tennessee River, or Guntersville Lake, to the east. Whitacre Point and Lodge Point wall in the main part of town, with Battle Creek north of Whitacre Point and Richard City south of Lodge Point. U.S. Route 72 runs north and south toward Jasper and Bridgeport, Alabama; Tennessee State Route 156 crosses the Shelby Reinhart Bridge to New Hope and Haletown and heads west toward Sewanee and Monteagle, with Interstate 24 just north in Kimball.
The older place names come from rail, river, iron, and cement. A Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad branch reached the Sequatchie Valley in the late 1860s, and the post office opened as Battle Creek Mines in 1869. The British-backed Southern States Coal, Iron and Land Company chose the river-and-rail location as an iron production center and commercial hub, and the post office name changed to South Pittsburg in 1876. South of town, Dixie-Portland Cement, later Penn-Dixie, developed Richard City, where many houses, churches, businesses, and even utility poles were made with company cement; South Pittsburg annexed Richard City in 1985. The city is also home to the National Cornbread Festival.
