Sunbright’s layout starts with the old railroad story: the early settlement was called Pine Top, then Stapleton after the Staples family opened the first post office, before the 1879 railroad depot put the Sunbright name on the map. The hills west of town changed the pace again after the 1916 oil field discovery, when Sunbright spent several years as an oil shipping hub and wells spread through the area by 1927.
