Tazewell sits on the northern slope of Wallen Ridge in Claiborne County, just east of the junction of US 25E and SR 33. US 25E is the main line toward Morristown to the southeast and Middlesboro, Kentucky, to the north, while SR 33 runs southwest toward Maynardville and northeast toward Sneedville and the upper Clinch Valley. Big Barren Creek starts in west Tazewell and runs toward the Norris Lake impoundment of the Clinch River; the east side drains toward the Powell River. For residential teams, the town reads as ridge-and-valley territory tied together by those two highways, not a square street grid.
Tazewell’s layout still carries the old county-seat story. John Hunt helped get the Claiborne County seat placed here in 1804, with county government first meeting at his house before a courthouse was built. Confederate troops occupied Tazewell in 1862 during the fight over Cumberland Gap, and a fire after their evacuation destroyed much of the town; the surviving historic fabric includes Victorian-era structures and the 1819 jail. The split with New Tazewell traces to the 1890 railroad plan, when depot protests pushed the line several miles west and homes and businesses grew around that stop.
