The place

About Tracy City.

Residential work in Tracy City sits inside a town whose map was shaped by coal, railroad fuel, and the families who came for that work. Coal was found in 1840, Samuel Franklin Tracy gave the town its name, and the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company backed the Fiery Gizzard furnace experiment in the early 1870s. The coke ovens then supplied railroad and industrial fuel while workers and families moved in from 1875 to 1900, before the industry faded by 1910. Tracy City incorporated in 1915, and the coke ovens’ National Register listing in 1987 keeps that mining-era footprint visible.

Today, Tracy City landmarks give residential teams their local bearings: Grundy Lakes State Park, Tracy City Mini Park, the roadside picnic area, and the Plainview Community Center. The town is one end of the Fiery Gizzard Trail, tying everyday house calls to a place many Tennesseans know for scenery as much as coal history. Dutch Maid Bakery, opened in 1902 by John Baggenstoss with Swiss recipes, and the Marugg Company, founded in 1873 by Swiss settler Christian Marugg, are the kind of long-running local anchors that explain why families stayed.

Tennessee licensing

Know your license before you bid.

Tennessee requires a contractor's license before you bid or quote a price on any job totaling $25,000 or more, materials and labor together. That applies to the contractor running the job, and separately to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing and masonry work whose own share reaches $25,000. The license has to be in hand before the bid goes out, not before the work starts.

Below that, Grundy County has not adopted Tennessee's Home Improvement law, so there is no separate Home Improvement license for residential jobs under $25,000 in Tracy City. Nine counties did adopt it — Davidson, Rutherford and Robertson among them — so a job across the county line can carry a requirement this one does not.

Licensing rules are set by the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors, not by LeadChuck. Verified 2026-07-30; confirm with the Board before you rely on it.

Questions from Tracy City contractors.

Does it cost anything to get listed in Tracy City?

No. Your public listing is free, and it stays free. You only ever pay when you accept a lead another contractor sends you.

How do leads work in Tracy City?

Contractors send jobs they can't take to someone who can. The contractor sending the job picks who to send it to based on the lead fee that contractor has posted, so you're never bidding against anyone. You see the job before you decide, and you pay only if you accept it. Payment is by bank transfer — we don't take card payments.

What is the referral program?

Every past customer gets a permanent referral link. When they refer a friend and confirm it, that customer gets a thank-you gift card — you choose the amount — and it's unconditional: they get it whether or not the friend ever books a job. The friend never sees the gift card; they just arrive as a warm introduction.
