Watauga sits along the Watauga River at the headwaters of Boone Lake, with its downtown in Carter County and its limits crossing into Washington County. Johnson City is five miles to the southwest, Elizabethton five miles to the southeast, and the city is part of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol Tri-Cities region. The reason Watauga is where it is runs through the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad. In the 1850s, Carter’s Depot, also called Carter’s Station, formed where a trestle carried the tracks over the Watauga River; the stop had a water tank, storage buildings, a telegraph office, and a post office. During the Civil War, that trestle mattered enough to draw the East Tennessee bridge burnings, Samuel P. Carter’s December 1862 raid, and an October 1864 skirmish in which Alvan C. Gillem’s Union forces pushed John C. Vaughn’s Confederates across the river. The older story reaches farther back: William Bean built his cabin at the mouth of Boone Creek in 1769, and the Watauga Association operated from nearby Elizabethton in the 1770s.
