Waverly sits in the Trace Creek Valley, walled in by low ridges on the western fringe of the Highland Rim, and the town still turns on the crossing of U.S. Route 70 and State Route 13. The town’s center moved here because it became the practical middle of Humphreys County after Benton County was split off west of the Tennessee River; the courthouse followed in 1836, and Waverly incorporated in 1838.
The local history is tied closely to transportation and water. Waverly began as Steven Pavatt’s stop on the stagecoach road between Nashville and Memphis, later saw Union troops guard the railroad between White Bluff and Johnsonville, and still lives just over 10 miles east of where Trace Creek meets the Kentucky Lake impoundment of the Tennessee River. That creek is not background scenery: on August 21, 2021, more than 17 inches of rain sent Trace Creek through the middle of town, flooding homes with up to 4 feet of water and washing some completely off their foundations.
