The place

About Whitwell.

Whitwell sits in Marion County about 24 miles northwest of Chattanooga, but the working map is the southwestern Sequatchie Valley: Tennessee State Route 28, signed as Hudson Street, is the north–south spine toward Dunlap and Jasper. State Route 283 carries traffic east across the Sequatchie River toward Powells Crossroads, while State Route 108, South Main Street, climbs northwest toward Grundy County on the Cumberland Plateau. For a residential team, that means Whitwell jobs are framed by valley roads, the river just east of town, and the steep Plateau escarpment at its back.

The place was Cheekville before it became Whitwell, renamed for Thomas Whitwell of the Southern States Coal, Iron and Land Company, and its layout still comes from growing as a coal-mining town in the mountains nearby. Whitwell incorporated in 1956, and the 1981 mine explosion is still marked by the monument at Whitwell High School. Whitwell Middle School is known far beyond Marion County for the Paper Clips Project, begun by students in 1998, with the rail car on campus. The annual Labor Day celebration has been part of local life for more than 50 consecutive years.

Tennessee licensing

Know your license before you bid.

Tennessee requires a contractor's license before you bid or quote a price on any job totaling $25,000 or more, materials and labor together. That applies to the contractor running the job, and separately to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing and masonry work whose own share reaches $25,000. The license has to be in hand before the bid goes out, not before the work starts.

Below that, Marion County is one of the nine Tennessee counties that adopted the Home Improvement law, so residential work in Whitwell from $3,000 to $24,999 needs a Home Improvement license — remodeling, roofing, painting, decks, driveways, pools and fences included. Most of Middle Tennessee has not adopted it, which is why the answer changes from one county to the next.

Licensing rules are set by the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors, not by LeadChuck. Verified 2026-07-30; confirm with the Board before you rely on it.

Questions from Whitwell contractors.

Does it cost anything to get listed in Whitwell?

No. Your public listing is free, and it stays free. You only ever pay when you accept a lead another contractor sends you.

How do leads work in Whitwell?

Contractors send jobs they can't take to someone who can. The contractor sending the job picks who to send it to based on the lead fee that contractor has posted, so you're never bidding against anyone. You see the job before you decide, and you pay only if you accept it. Payment is by bank transfer — we don't take card payments.

What is the referral program?

Every past customer gets a permanent referral link. When they refer a friend and confirm it, that customer gets a thank-you gift card — you choose the amount — and it's unconditional: they get it whether or not the friend ever books a job. The friend never sees the gift card; they just arrive as a warm introduction.
